„WETTEN, DASS?“, FRAGT DER MEDIZINMANN

Die Sprache der Mediziner ist an sich schon eine fast ureigene Sprache, gepflastert mit lateinischen und altgriechischen Fachausdrücken und modernen englischsprachigen Abkürzungen. Da bestünde die zweite große Chance des medizinisch Bewanderten dann darin, sich in diesem sprachlich eigenartigen Terrain dann auch auf Englisch selbstsicher zu bewegen. Klar, kommunizieren Mediziner auf der ganzen Welt in ihrer eigentümlichsten Art und Weise, so dass sie untereinander keinerlei Verständigungsprobleme haben. Der Verlauf einer medizinischen Angelegenheit, sprich bei ein und derselben Krankheit ist ja kein anderer, nur weil der zu behandelnde Patient Englisch besser als Deutsch versteht.

Englisch für Mediziner meint nicht schlicht einem Arzt englisch bei- oder nahezubringen, denn wir bewegen uns zunehmend in aufgeregten Zeiten. In Zeiten, die es unabdingbar werden lassen, nicht nur in globalen Zügen zu denken und zu handeln, sondern uns auch auf  internationaler, bi-nationaler und multinationaler Ebene zu verständigen. Da spielt es kaum noch eine Rolle auf welchem Boden sich die Verständigung als solche abspielt. Da werden Mediziner, die sich im Ausland engagieren auch schnell zu Sozialarbeitern und wehe, da bringt man was durcheinander, nur weil man versucht ist, einen fremden Begriff eins zu eins übersetzen zu wollen. Ein  typisches Beispiel ist der Deadbeat Dad und der muss bei weitem nicht unbedingt ein Totschlagvater sein. Kommen Sie auch gar nicht erst in Versuchung mit eins-zu-eins übersetzten Begriffen für Humor zu sorgen. Es ist noch nicht erwiesen, wie es sich anfühlt, mit dem Totschlagargument zu punkten und dabei das deadbeat argument heranzuziehen. Allein der Begriff des Arguments steht oft im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes für mehr Ärger als Sie ganz im Geist eines deutschen Kosmopoliten anzunehmen vermögen.

Welchen Beruf Sie im englischsprachigen Ausland nachgehen? Was immer Sie in Ländern wie England, Schottland, Irland oder auf den Kontinenten Nordamerikas und Australiens oder des Subkontinents Indien und wo überall Englisch gesprochen wird, antreibt oder Sie zu tun haben? – Tun Sie es im Sinne des jeweiligen Landes, der jeweiligen Kultur und Sprache und Sie fahren damit besser. Gerade wenn es um Bremslichter oder Bremsspuren geht, dann finden Sie sich bitte damit ab, dass die englische Übersetzung unter Umständen mehr als drei Worte braucht.
